Method for Designing and Characterizing Phototherapy Shields

Optimal shield properties and design are of vital importance for preventing adverse effects light-based clinical procedures. The goal this study was to select the most appropriate materials a two-layer phototherapy shield. Four biocompatible fabrics, be utilized as layer contacting patients’ skin, two reflective materials, facing light source, were investigated. optical four fabrics transmittance determined in 400–500 nm range. Absorption coefficient, scattering anisotropy factors using integrating sphere spectrophotometry an inverse Monte Carlo method. Fabric that exhibited highest attenuation blue selected assemble composite prototype. Prototypes exposed emitted from source ensure negligible temperature increase under clinically relevant exposure conditions. A protype blue-light made test both which provide sufficient patient protection. testing method employed may prove valuable designing protective gear range procedures .

The irradiance produced by phototherapy units in use on a neonatal unit was measured. The phototherapy tubes were found to decline at a variable rate. Heat shields used to decrease heat and evaporative losses in the very low birthweight infant reduce irradiance and may appreciably limit the effectiveness of phototherapy.
